A 2021 video of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in which he criticizes spending money on space travel has gone viral on social media.

In the Oct. 27, 2021 dated video, Erdoğan says “On the one hand, 810 million people do not have access to the most basic foodstuffs, while on the other hand, large capital owners can spend hundreds of millions of dollars for a few minutes of touristic space travel.”

Erdoğan shot the video message in question for the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) 8th Ministerial Conference Responsible for Food Security and Agricultural Development held in Istanbul.

The video has gone viral after a Turkish astronaut, Alper Gezeravcı, embarked on a space journey for the first time last week.

Gezeravcı arrived at the International Space Station with a mission from Texas startup Axiom Space which charges its customers at least $55 million for each astronaut seat.

Opposition Future Party deputy Selçuk Özdağ shared Erdoğan’s 2021 video and said “This man is always tested with his claims.”
