Turkey’s western Afyonkarahisar Municipality has increased the marriage license fee 24-fold for immigrant residents. The move came after a court annulled the municipality’s previous decision to increase the fee by 25 times.

Turkey’s western Afyonkarahisar Municipality once again implemented its xenophobic marriage fee policy for immigrant residents despite a court order.
The municipality previously increased the fee 24-fold for immigrant residents, making it 10,000 liras ($294).
A Turkish court annulled this decision upon an application by The International Refugee Rights Association.
This time, the municipality increased the fee 24-fold.
Mayor Burcu Köksal, from the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP), argued, “The court found the rate in our previous decision too high, so we are canceling this decision and increasing it by 24 times.”
