Playing safe is perilous We had our own Biden in Turkey. And believe me when I say all the countries that had a Trump were as brilliant as the American Democrats in coming up with or inventing a Biden of their own. Replacing Bernies with Bidens has never worked in the long run.
Hagia Sophia: The great amplifier The political Islamist aspirations that Erdoğan supporters call “the cause” have been totally unleashed. The amplified noise of this cause no longer allows any voice of finesse to be heard, let alone be amplified, in the Hagia Sophia or elsewhere. The long June of our dignity As someone who experienced uprisings from the crisis in Argentina to Gezi, including Tahrir and Al Kasbah, the best “advice” that I can come up with is to remind Europe of her obligation to recognize the global uprising in the name of dignity, the word she was once so passionate about.
Madness as an act of resistance The coronavirus has created its own, quite distinct mental hegemony. Not only it is impossible to think or talk about anything else, but the global crisis has also abducted our dreams. The coronavirus is a global loop that dumbs us down dramatically. If it goes on like this by this time next year we might end up being spotless idiots. Being in contact in a contactless new world The world is at its best to allow the sane, the humane and the rational to take over. A table for the ephemeral Once you leave your home country, you are incurably ephemeral. The mind commands the body to live in half-formed places with transient conditions, for it secretly believes that allowing yourself the comfort of settling down will seal your destiny for good, cancelling the probability of going back home. Tadeium democratie The problem is no democracy on the planet is strong enough to regulate this arena where truths are hunted down or ridiculed to the ground by some zombie-like digital creatures and entities. Most of the business of shaping the truth and our democracies is run in shadows yet we do know that the agora-turned-arena, where today’s deformed democracies are emerging from is owned by a handful of people, most visible of them being Zuckerberg. Global dictionary of political insanity Ten years ago, it was impossible to translate Turkey for the foreign audience. It wasn’t because we, the English speaking Turks, didn’t have the sufficient vocabulary but it was because what we went through politically simply did not make sense to the Western audience. However today, a remainer in Britain, a Trump critic in the U.S. and any Western European who suffers the maddening tricks of right-wing populism can guess the framework that Turkey’s excruciating story took place.
