Magnitude 5.0 earthquake strikes eastern Turkey

Anearthquake with a magnitude of 5.0 struck Turkey's eastern provinceof Elazığ on March 19.

Thequake hit Elazığ's Sivrice district at 8.53 p.m. local time at adepth of 21 kilometers, according to Turkey's National Disaster andEmergency Management Authority (AFAD).

No casualties or damage has been so far reported.

Theregion is one of the most seismically active districts in thecountry, where earthquakes occur often and are destructive.

Over 40 people died and hundreds were injured after a 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck Elazığ on Jan. 24. The quake's epicenter was again Sivrice district.
