Prosecutors opt to not pursue investigation into police brutality against high school students
Istanbul prosecutors have decided not to pursue an investigation into high school students who were beaten police last year as they held a demonstration in the district of Kadıköy. In spite of images showing the police using violence against the students, prosecutors determined that the police acted within scope of their powers.

Istanbul prosecutors have decided not to pursue an investigation into high school students who were beaten police last year as they held a demonstration in the district of Kadıköy. In spite of images showing the police using violence against the students, prosecutors determined that the police acted within scope of their powers.
In June of 2018, students from several leftist groups held a demonstration on the main shopping street in Kadıköy, brandishing banner that read “the report cards are yours, the future is ours.” Numerous students were detained, and there was a strong reaction on social media after images of police using violence against the students circulated.
Twelve days after the incident, an Istanbul court determined that even if the protestors did not have permission to hold a demonstration, it was a peaceful one and police should have acted more tolerantly.
22 students filed a criminal complaint against the police, though prosecutors ultimately decided not to pursue an investigation.
