Renowned geologist Prof. Dr. Ahmet Ercan detained over social media post

Turkish police on Feb. 28 detained renowned geologist Prof. Dr. Ahmet Ercan over one of his social media posts, on accusations of “instigating people into hatred and enmity.”

Renowned geologist Prof. Dr. Övgün Ahmet Ercan has been detained in the eastern province of Elazığ on the grounds of one of his media posts, according to reporting by state-run Anadolu Agency on Feb. 28.

The professor is facing charges of “instigating people into hatred and enmity” due to his social media post that read there were reports of women being sexually abused in the earthquake zone.  

The investigation was launched by the Malatya Prosecutor’s Office. After his interrogation at the police station, the professor will be transferred to the Malatya Courthouse to give his testimony at the prosecutor’s office.
