As a new wave of cold weather and snowfall hits Istanbul, Governor Davut Gül announced that schools in the megacity were closed for one day on Feb. 12.

The governor also announced that disabled and pregnant personnel working in public institutions were put on administrative leave for the day.

Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu urged citizens to stay indoors on Feb. 12 if they can.

He said a heavy snowfall is expected during the night hours and “is expected to continue starting from the morning hours, mainly on the European side and western regions, shifting a little more to the eastern (Istanbul) at noon (on Feb. 12).”

“It is predicted that there will be no more snowfall as of Thursday, and we are likely to see the sun as of Friday,” he said, adding that the municipality is ready with around 12,000 personnel and 3,375 equipment.
