Turkish diver Şahika Ercümen breaks national record at prestigious competition
Turkish free diver Şahika Ercümen on July 13 broke the national record in the constant weight (CWT) category at the 2021 Vertical Blue freediving competition in the Bahamas.

Internationally-renowned Turkish diver Şahika Ercümen on July 13 broke the national record in the constant weight (CWT) category when she dove 87 meters in 2 minutes and 47 seconds on the first day of the 2021 Vertical Blue freediving competition at Dean’s Blue Hole in the Bahamas, Anadolu news agency reported.
In the constant weight category, one dives following a guide line rope and using fins.
The Vertical Blue is the first international freediving competition since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Running between July 13 to 23, the competitive freediving competition is also known as the “Wimbledon of freediving.”
Four world records and a bunch of national records were set on the first day of competition, one of which belonged to Ercümen.
Ercümen had broken the women's world record for cave diving without an oxygen tank in Gilindire Cave in the southern Turkish province of Mersin on October 28, 2019.
She has taken part in numerous activities to raise awareness about sea protection.
