A court has arrested a co-mayor from the pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP), as dismissals and arrests of the party’s elected mayors continue.
Hatice Çevik, co-mayor of the Suruç district of the southeastern province of Urfa, was arrested over “being a member of a terrorist organization” and “making propaganda for a terrorist group” on Nov. 20.
Dozens of HDP mayors and a number of the party’s deputies are imprisoned over their alleged links with the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) – a group designated as a terrorist organization by Ankara, Washington and the European Union.
Çevik, whose daughter was killed in an ISIS suicide bombing in Ankara in 2015, was elected by getting 60 percent of the votes.
She was dismissed from her post last week to be replaced with a trustee.
