A mega yacht once belonging to the inventory of the Turkish navy has been restored and added to the inventory of the Presidency, according to a report in daily Cumhuriyet newspaper.
Main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) deputy Utku Çakırözer submitted an inquiry about the yacht, named Yakamoz, a difficult term to translate that refers to the moonlight sparkling on the sea at night.
Vice President Fuat Oktay responded by saying that the yacht was ordered for the Presidency but used by the Turkish Naval Forces, and was subsequently transferred to the Presidency on March 16, 2018. The ship was previously used by the navy to transport personnel.
“Under conditions where an economic crisis is deepening, poverty is increasing and a wide segment of society is trying to get by on the minimum wage, does the Presidency really need a yacht? For what purpose and what services will this yacht be used?” Çakırözer asked.
Yakamoz is in the 'megayacht' category, as it is 50 meters in length and can travel at speeds of up to 28 kilometers an hour. It was restored after being transferred from the navy to the Presidency.
