Istanbul residents will be able to use a mobile application to make payments at public transportation turnstiles starting in March, the municipality said.

Istanbul Municipality's subcontractor Belbim developed the application that will create QR codes for passengers that they will show at the turnstiles, allowing them to travel without their cards.

The application will aim to make the Istanbulkart subscription, Istanbul's transportation card, into a tool that can be used for multiple purposes.

The pilot for the application will be available in March and will be applicable for the metrobus, a special bus line in Istanbul that has its own lanes, allowing it to avoid traffic.

The application will eventually be applicable in the metro, ferries and the Marmaray rail line.
