The United States will reportedly expand its consulate premises in Istanbul’s Sarıyer district.
U.S. officials submitted an application to Istanbul Municipality’s Zoning Directorate to receive permit to construct new buildings on the 59 acres of land, daily Sözcü reported on March 24.
The municipality submitted the application to the Regional Commission for the Protection of Natural Assets for approval, the daily also said.
According to Sözcü, the U.S. will construct an additional building on the land and transfer a number of units that are in the main building to the new one once the permit is obtained.
The U.S. purchased the consulate land in 1997 and began constructing the building in 2000. The construction was completed in 2003.
