One person dies as heavy rains strike Istanbul

A Syrian national died and eight people were hospitalized after heavy rains lashed Istanbul on June 23, flooding streets, shops and basement homes. The worst-hit district was Esenyurt, where a stream has burst its banks.

One person died when Turkey’s largest city was hit by heavy rains, Istanbul’s governor said on June 23.

A Syrian national around 30-32 years old died in the city's Esenyurt district, Governor Ali Yerlikaya told reporters.

Yerlikaya said that eight others were hospitalized due to flash flooding.

“Two people in Çatalca, two people in Beylikdüzü and four people in Esenyurt are being treated in hospitals,” he said.

Heavy rains and hail storms lashed the megacity on June 23, flooding streets, shops and basements homes.

A waterspout was also spotted at Lake Büyükçekmece.

On June 21, flash floods caused by heavy rains hit the Kestel district of the northwestern province of Bursa, killing five people. A sixth person is reported missing.
