PodcastMagnitude 4.1 earthquake strikes in Marmara Sea
Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) announced that a 4.1-magnitude earthquake struck the Marmara Sea early on Sept. 9. Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute on the other hand announced the magnitude of the earthquake as 4.3.

A 4.1-magnitude earthquake was recorded in the Marmara Sea off northwestern Turkey early on Sept. 9, according to the country’s disaster agency.
The quake struck at a depth of 9.9 kilometers around 12.57 a.m. local time around 8.2 kilometers offshore of Şarköy district in Tekirdağ province, according to the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD).
It was also felt in the Turkish metropolis of Istanbul.

Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute on the other hand announced the magnitude of the earthquake as 4.3 and its depth as 13.7 kilometers. It also said that the quake struck offshore of Güzelköy district.

In 1999, an earthquake measuring 7.6 struck the Marmara city of İzmit, 90 km southeast of Istanbul, killing more than 17,000 people. Since then, experts have been warning the next big earthquake should be expected to occur in the vicinity of Istanbul before 2030. Istanbul residents have subconsciously been waiting for the earthquake.
