The 11 garbage-collecting employee mules of the Black Sea's Zonguldak Municipality were retired with a ceremony on Sept. 15.

As Mayor Ömer Selim Alan and the mules' groomers marked the employees' retirement as of this weekend, animal lovers participated in the celebration.

"For long years, they've carried our burden on their backs through the winter and the summer, up hills and stairs," Alan said.

"This Sunday we will take their burden off their back. They will be retired."

As the four-legged laborers retire, residents of Zonguldak were asked to meticulously place their trash in containers across town as opposed to leaving them on their doorstep for collection.
