Turkey's energy watchdog has launched a probe into Istanbul's gas grid over issuing bills against regulations following an unusual number of complaints from users.
The Energy Market Regulatory Authority (EPDK) has said that the Istanbul Natural Gas Authority (İGDAŞ) prepared the bills in time intervals that go against the regulations.
"When we looked into the complaints, we saw that the bills were issued in time intervals against the regulations. This situation has caused a considerable increase in our citizens' bills," EPDK chair Mustafa Yılmaz said on May 6.
"We have immediately launched an investigation. We'll do what's necessary," he added.
The unusual increase in the natural gas bills has been drawing criticism from users in Istanbul.
'We hope that it will not reoccur'
Yılmaz said that the EPDK has been looking into all complaints and urged those suspicious of their bills to file an application from the EPDK's website.
"We have never come across such complaints in the natural gas sector. We hope that it will not reoccur," he said.
