Turkey has imposed a fine of 2.4 million liras (approximately $350,000) on a vessel for polluting the Marmara Sea off Istanbul's Yeşilköy neighborhood.

The incident surfaced after resolution cameras detected the vessel named “Seaguardian” dumping waste in the Marmara Sea. Samples were taken from the waste and sent to TÜBİTAK Marmara Research Center.

The vessel was imposed a fine of 2,397,000 liras for dumping domestic sewage in Turkish waters and thereby breaching the environment law.

Pursuant to Article 20 of the Turkish Environmental Code no. 1983, fines are imposed on vessels for causing pollution in Turkish waters through discharge of petroleum products, dirty ballast, garbage and sewage into the sea. The quantum of the fines are determined by a tariff that is revised annually.
