Istanbul Governor Ali Yerlikaya has urged Istanbulites to stay home for the next 48 hours in bid to curb the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19), saying that the city was left to birds.

“We left our squares to birds and our seasides to the seagulls. In order to experience these beauties and share them with our loved ones [in the future], for your health, family, loved ones, Istanbul and our country, don’t leave your house for 48 hours,” Yerlikaya tweeted on March 29.

A day earlier, Turkish Health Minister Fahrettin Koca said that the death toll from the outbreak rose by 16 to 108, as the number of confirmed cases jumped by 1,704 to 7,402.
