Eating together isn't safe during pandemic, Turkish expert warns

Sharing a meal with others at a table isn't safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, Turkey's Coronavirus Science Committee member Prof. Tevfik Özlü said. Noting that everyone takes off their masks to eat, the professor said it was an "ideal situation" for the virus to spread.

Eating at the same table with others is not safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, Turkey's Health Ministry Coronavirus Committee Member Prof. Tevfik Özlü said on social media on Sept. 30.

"Eating and drinking together isn't safe during the pandemic, sharing a meal at a table isn't safe. Everyone should eat in isolation or at safe distances from each other," the expert said.

The professor said that sharing meals, regardless of whether it was at a home or in a restaurant, was an ideal situation for COVID-19 to spread.

"Naturally, nobody wears a mask. You're unprotected, and you're sitting at a table, so you can't keep a distance," Özlü said.

The committee member also urged everyone to check for kitchen staff's use of personal protective equipment if they choose to go out for a meal.
