Parents of a child in the Central Anatolian province of Çankırı have changed their son's name from Recep Tayyip to Aras after abandoning support for President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

Ayşe and Hüseyin Erdoğan named their child Recep Tayyip in 2015, but regretted their decision afterwards.

They then launched a name change case and the court on Dec. 6 ruled for the child to be called Aras Erdoğan instead of Recep Tayyip Erdoğan from now on.

Hüseyin Erdoğan previously told a main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) delegation that officials have denied his request to change the name of his son due to fearing punishment.

Erdoğan said that he used to vote for the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) and hence named his son after President Erdoğan.

"Now I regret it. I want to change my son's name, but the officials said, 'If we change his name, we'll be relocated. That's why we can't change it,'" the father had said.
