A Turkish court arrested a mayor from the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) on Dec. 16, state-run Anadolu Agency has reported.

İbrahim Burak Oğuz, mayor of the Urla district of the Aegean province of İzmir, was arrested over alleged links to the Gülen movement, which Turkish authorities refer to as Fethullahist Terrorist Organization (FETÖ).

Anadolu Agency said that Oğuz used to be an executive board member of the Young Businessmen Association of İzmir (İGİD), which was previously closed due to its suspected links to the Gülen movement.

The CHP's İzmir provincial head, Deniz Yücel, criticized the arrest on his Twitter account.

“Our Urla Mayor Burak Oğuz has been arrested. There is no chance of FETÖ living in the CHP. We condemn that those who came [to the office] with elections are removed with the hand of the law. We are in solidarity with our mayor. We are following the judicial process. We'll release a detailed statement regarding this issue tomorrow,” Yücel said.
