Surveillance cameras in parliament to increase in number despite MP objections

Surveillance cameras in Turkish Parliament will increase in numbers despite objections from members. The cameras are "not aimed at members, just at the doors" and they do not record sound, said Parliament's Deputy Chairman Süreyya Sadi Bilgiç. The cameras are currently located underneath the balconies.

Surveillance cameras that have been placed on the balconies overlooking Parliament will increase in number despite creating controversy.

Members of parliament have complained about the cameras on the balconies. However, Parliament's Deputy Chairman Süreyya Sadi Bilgi defended that "they do not overlook members, only the doors", as reported by daily Hürriyet.

Parliament will install cameras in other buildings too, Bilgiç said adding that the cameras do not record voices, and are targeted at outside visitors.

The issue was brought up in a parliamentary query by Mahmut Tanal from the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP), who noted that members chat with many different people on the parliament floor, and that the cameras create tension.
