Rumors that the Istanbul Municipality (IBB) had stopped maintenance and cleaning on certain mosques is incorrect, municipality spokesperson Murat Ongun said.

"Claims that IBB has stopped maintenance and cleaning of mosques is incorrect," Ongun said as a response to rumors on social media.

Ongun added that the protocol for "Mosques Possessing Historic and Touristic Value," which there are 39 of, has been re-evaluated by IBB's Cultural Heritage Branch.

"Mosques, mausoleums, burial sites and fountains possessing historical value will be cleaned, maintained and repaired as part of preventative measures," Ongun said.

Ongun added that 195 cleaning staff, 25 restoration workers, 12 restaurateurs and 25 architects/engineers will be working for maintenance.
