Cihangir İslam, the Istanbul deputy of the Islamist Felicity Party, has resigned from his party and will stand as an independent legislator.
Following İslam’s move, the number of Felicity Party deputies in the Turkish parliament decreased to one, whereas the number of independent legislators increased to seven.
İslam was dismissed from the Kafkas University in the eastern province of Kars in 2017, where he was a professor in medicine, via a state of emergency decree known as KHK.
In June 24, 2018 general elections, he won a seat in the parliament.
Saadet Party deputy chair Hasan Bitmez thanked Cihangir for his work for the party and wished him success in a Twitter statement on March 4.
“We thank our Istanbul deputy Cihangir İslam for the work and contributions he made so far inside and outside the parliament and wish him success in his following deputyship duty,” Bitmez wrote.
