The brother-in-law of pro-government businessman Ethem Sancak was elected as the head of the Court of Cassation.
Court of Cassation Chief Public Prosecutor Mehmet Akarca replaced İsmail Rüştü Cirit, who retired over age limit, on March 24.
A total of 332 court members cast votes in the elections that took place under coronavirus precautions.
Akarca gained 267 of the votes.
A 1986 graduate of Dokuz Eylül University, Akarca worked in various public prosecution positions in the country and joined the Court of Cassation in 2010.
He was appointed chief public prosecutor by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in 2015, and then reappointed in 2019.
Speaking after his election, Akarca thanked everyone for working hard during this difficult time, alluding to the virus pandemic, and wished the country well in the weeks and months ahead.
