The pro-Kurdish Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) announced on June 22 that it referred two of its co-mayors to the party disciplinary committee in the face of criticism and complaints coming from the people.
The disciplinary action concerns the co-mayors of the eastern province of Ağrı's Doğubeyazıt district.
The HDP said that it has received complaints that Yıldız Acar and Cesim Çakan were undertaking actions and policies contrary to the “socialist, transparent and participative municipalism which form a basis to our party's local administrations.”
“When the disciplinary process is completed, we will share its details and results with the public,” the party said.
The HDP appoints one male and one female as mayor to promote gender-equality, calling them co-mayors, although only one is recognized by the central government.
