Turkey’s southeastern province of Kahramanmaraş’s Nurhak district mayor İlhami Bozan has stated that the earthquake rubble is being dumped in stream beds.
Bozan said the governor does not consult them since they are a main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) municipality and the problems continue because of this, ANKA News Agency reported on April 2.
"The rubble is being dumped in stream beds. We are paving the way for future troubles. We call out to all institutions and organizations; please decide together with the local governments so that we don't experience pain in the future,” Bozan said.
Bozan also added that the rubble contains asbestos which pollutes the environment. “All of these problems will be the problems that will be left to the Nurhak Municipality tomorrow,” Bozan said, referring to the rubble being dumped in stream beds.
Turkey’s southeastern region was struck by two major earthquakes on Feb. 6, one at a magnitude of 7.7 and the other at 7.6.
According to the official figures, more than 200,000 buildings either collapsed or severely damaged due to the quakes in 11 provinces. The government stopped sharing the information for the only collapsed buildings.
