Search engine giant Google has revealed the top items searched in Turkey in 2019 under five categories, with the results of Istanbul local elections topping the list in the category called “General.”
The elections were the number one topic in the country’s agenda for almost half a year. Istanbul citizens headed to polls twice this year due to the first local elections on March 31 getting cancelled.
The second one was held on June 23, with Ekrem İmamoğlu from the main opposition Republican Peoples’ Party (CHP) securing a major win against former Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım from the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP).
The second on the list in the “General” category became “Geleceğe Nefes” (Breath for the Future), a nationwide mass tree planting event that set a new world record for planting the most saplings in an hour.
The Supreme Election Board (YSK) ranked third on the list – most likely due to the controversy surrounding the board over its decision to annul and renew Istanbul elections.
According to Google, the name that was searched the most was Emine Bulut, who was stabbed to death by her ex-husband in front of her 10-year-old daughter.
The footage showing the murder of Bulut caused an uproar in the country, with hundreds of thousands of people urging the government to take action in the face of the increasing number of femicides.
Mayor İmamoğlu came in second in the category of “Names.”
The winner of the “Food” category was revani – a popular Turkish dessert with syrup that’s also known as sweet semolina cake.
The most popular search for “TV Shows” was “Mucize Doktor,” a Turkish adaptation of the ABC show “The Good Doctor,” while the most Googled song was “Derdim Olsun” by Reynmen, a Turkish rap artist who rose to stardom this year.
