Half of Turkey's population wishes the country to join the European Union, a recent poll by the private polling company Metropoll revealed.

While 53.7 percent of the population seemed to be in favor of joining the EU, 34.7 percent were against it.

The pro-Kurdish People's Democratic Party (HDP) had the highest rate of approval among major political parties with 72.1 percent saying Turkey should join the EU.

It is significant to note that HDP's approval rate is almost 20 percent higher than that of the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) which had the second highest rate of participants saying 'yes.'

Opposition Good Party (İP) had the lowest rate of pro-EU responses with 44.7 percent, almost ten percent less than the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) which has the second lowest approval rate at 51.2 percent.

While the ratio of 'yes' to 'no' answers didn't vary much across age groups, 18-34 year old participants had the highest rate of approval with 56.3 percent.

Participants between the ages of 35 and 54 had the lowest rating at 50.9 percent.
