The Personal Information Protection Law, enacted in 2016, is not enforced properly, despite a two-year adjustment period that ended over a year and a half ago, Sefa Karcıoğlu told daily Hürriyet.
"Hotels aren't allowed to ask you for a copy of your ID," Karcıoğlu said, "Service providers like gyms aren't allowed to scan your fingerprints or your eyes."
Delivery packages are also forbidden to display the receiver's ID number or the contents of the package. One is not mandated to provide a copy of one's ID at a job interview. Karcıoğlu also noted one should not be handing out the phone number of one's friend.
