The governor's office in the Black Sea province of Giresun banned smoking cigarettes in public spaces on the grounds that it required removing face masks, hence risking the spread of COVID-19. The province will fine those smoking in the streets, parks or any other public spaces.
Batman governor and police chief were seen flouting the coronavirus measures during a wedding party, daily Sözcü reported on Aug. 24. Gov. Hulusi Şahin had his photo taken without his mask on, whereas Police Chief Köroğlu Kıraç performed halay dance with guests.
The governor's offices of Istanbul and Ankara have banned send-off celebrations for conscripts on the grounds that they pose a risk in the fight against the novel coronavirus. Media outlets have been recently showing people in these informal ceremonies flouting the social distancing rules.
Health Minister Fahrettin Koca has said that Turkish hospitals have been running at an ICU bed occupancy rate of between 59-61 percent for the last month. Koca’s remarks came as Turkey registered 1,053 new virus cases and 19 new fatalities on July 7.
