Turkey’s Worker Health and Work Safety (İSİG) Assembly reported at least 597 worker deaths for the first four months of 2024 in its “Workplace Homicide Report,” whereas this figure was 163 in April.

According to the report, 161 deaths were recorded in January, 149 in February, and 124 in March.

The most notable accident in April was the fire that broke out during renovations at Masquerade Club, a nightclub in Istanbul’s Beşiktaş, killing 30 workers. İSİG’s April report was dedicated to the 30 workers.

The construction sector came first with 51 worker deaths once again in April, followed by agriculture and forestry with 36 deaths, and housing with 20 deaths.

In April, five children under the age of 18 died in work-related accidents with two of them being under the age of 14. On the other hand, this figure was seven for refugee workers.

The report noted the most common causes of death as crushing under collapses, falls from heights, and poisoning or burning.

İSİG previously found that at least 1929 workers died from work-related accidents in 2023.
