A Turkish court on Nov. 22 arrested 39 police officers for accepting bribery. Previously, the Istanbul police have detained 46 police officers were involved in accepting bribery to overlook construction trucks with missing documentation, according to reporting by the Demirören News Agency (DHA).
The Public Security Office of the Istanbul Police Department initiated the first leg of the investigation on Nov. 7 upon receiving a tip. Some 59 people were detained and were later released under judicial control measures.
The second leg was initiated on Nov. 21, and 46 police officers were detained, 39 of whom were arrested.
Istanbul Police Chief Zafer Aktaş also suspended the officers from duty.
The police conducted raids in addresses in Istanbul, northwestern Kocaeli, northern Gümüşhane, and eastern Bitlis, Muş, and Şırnak provinces.
The statement by the Istanbul police department read, “The operation involving technical surveillance about giving/accepting bribes has detected that 62 civilians offered bribes and 46 police officers accepted bribes on 67 separate occasions through 2022 and 2023.”
