Turkish President Erdoğan congratulates 'friend' Trump's election victory

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has congratulated Donald Trump for his victory in the United States presidential elections, calling him a “friend.”

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on Nov. 6 congratulated Donald Trump, the Republican candidate and former president of the United States, in a post on X (formerly known as Twitter).

Erdoğan wrote, "I congratulate my friend Donald Trump, who won the presidential election in the United States after a great struggle and was re-elected as the President of the United States.”

The Turkish President also urged the new administration to focus on resolving the crisis in Palestine. “I hope for the strengthening of Turkey-U.S. relations, and for the resolution of crises and wars on both regional and global scales, primarily the Palestine issue and the Russia-Ukraine war.”

He continued, “I believe there will be greater efforts for a fairer world. I wish that the elections bring good fortune to the friendly and allied American people and all of humanity."

Erdoğan on July stated that a potential change in the U.S. administration after November's election may be positive for Turkey's growing defense industry.

While Erdoğan was said to have had good personal ties with Trump during his first presidential term between 2016 and 2020, the Trump Administration imposed sanctions on Turkey's defense procurement body in 2020 over Ankara's earlier purchase of Russian air defenses.
