The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) has announced that it has banned a taxi driver from profession after he was caught taking photos of women wearing shorts on the street.

The issue came out to light when two women who boarded on the taxi saw the driver taking photos of other women walking on the street. Suspecting that the driver had also taken their own pictures, the two women demanded that they go to a police station. When the taxi driver refused to do so, the women asked for help.

Initially, the taxi driver attempted to flee the scene, but he was eventually caught by the police and taken to a police station. Following the judicial procedures, he was released.

Once the issue was shared on social media, the İBB Transportation Services Directorate released a statement, saying that the taxi driver in question had been banned from profession “for an indefinite period of time.”

İBB Deputy Secretary General Buğra Gökçe released a statement on Twitter, saying: “We are following up on the issue with great sadness and anger since the moment the news report was published. I lay emphasis on this point: Our management’s basic policy is zero tolerance against unlawfulness, especially attacks concerning women. We have given the heaviest penalty (against the taxi driver) in line with the regulations and initiated the judicial process.”
