A 16-year-old high school student has been jailed for drawing a mustache and writing swearing words on an election banner of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in the southern Mersin province.

After spotting the banner in question, police teams have analyzed the security cameras around and determined the identity of the high school student.

After his testimony at the police station, the child was dispatched to the courthouse where judges ruled for his arrest on charges of “insulting the President” and “insulting a public official.”

Thousands of people have been prosecuted on "insulting the President" charge since Erdoğan assumed power. In 2021, the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) said that the relevant law should be changed.
