Istanbul ranks as ‘least liveable city’ in Europe
Turkey’s megacity Istanbul has ranked last in the Economist Intelligence Unit's (EIU) “Global Liveability Index 2022” report among European cities. “Increasingly authoritarian leadership under Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, the country’s president, as well as eye-watering inflation have dampened the quality of life,” the report read.

Turkey’s megacity Istanbul has ranked last in the report “Global Liveability Index 2022” published by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) among 38 European cities.
The cities was ranked in accordance with five categories: Stability, Healthcare, Culture & Environment, Education, Infrastructure.
Accordingly, Istanbul ranked last with 57.7 points out of 100, while Vienna ranked first with 99.1 points.
“Increasingly authoritarian leadership under Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, the country’s president, as well as eye-watering inflation have dampened the quality of life,” the report noted, blaming President Erdoğan for the conditions.
The report did not include Ukraine’s capital Kiev because of the Russian invasion.
On the other hand, Syria’s capital Damascus has ranked as the least liveable city among 172 cities all over the world, whereas Vienna again topped that list.
