Istanbul residents decide on city's iconic squares

The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) has revealed the results of a public poll that was conducted to choose the urban design projects to be implemented for the iconic squares in Taksim, Bakırköy and Salacak. Istanbulites picked "Project Number 15" from among the three finalists for Taksim, whereas “Project Number 12” came first for Bakırköy Square, and “Project 42” will reshape Salacak Coastline.

The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) on Nov. 13 revealed the results of a public poll that was conducted to choose the urban design projects to be implemented for the iconic squares in the city, those in Taksim, Bakırköy and Salacak.

The İBB said that the poll drew about 350,000 votes, about 209,000 of which were used to choose the project for Taksim Square. Istanbulites picked "Project Number 15" from among the three finalists for Taksim, which offers a long bridge and an observation deck for the square.

The project that won the heart of Istanbulites for Bakırköy Square was “Project Number 12,” whereas “Project 42” will reshape Salacak Square.

Istanbul Mayor tweeted: “A total of 352,784 votes have been used in the public poll conducted for the design competition for Istanbul squares. We thank everyone who has contributed with their designs and ideas to the design competition and voting process for Taksim, Bakırköy Squares and Salacak Coastline.”
