An older couple who had been missing for 16 days in the western province of Afyonkarahisar were dead in a water drain on Nov. 10.

Cevdet and Zeliha Uysal had disappeared from their home 16 days ago and were thought to have been the victims of a kidnapping, but were found lifeless some 600 meters from their home.

A shepherd named Abdullah Korkmaz noticed a smell coming from a water drain and found the couple's bodies upon inspection.

After the shepherd informed the gendarmerie, the couple's bodies were recovered from underneath a pile of rocks.

"They had always been quiet folk who minded their own business. They didn't harm anyone. They spent time in their garden and sold their produce at the local market," said village head Kemal Yıldırım.

The couple's children identified their bodies at Dinar State Hospital.
