Four special operations police officers are facing an investigation after they battered two citizens for wearing traditional Kurdish clothes in the southeastern province of Mardin.
The incident occurred on Dec. 31, 2022 in the Nusaybin district’s Dicle neighborhood. The investigation file was finalized after the release of the footage showing the special operations police battering citizens known by the initials B.K. (16) and Hüseyin G. (18), according to reporting by the Mezopotamya news agency.
The Nusaybin Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office prepared an indictment with regards to the police officers Ali A., Fatih Ş., Naim K. and Murat Y., demanding that they stand trial over charges of “actual bodily harm with weapon through abusing their power granted by being a public official.” The indictment was accepted by the Nusaybin Criminal Court of First Instance.
The indictment said that the four police officers disembarked from the armored police vehicle when they saw the two Kurdish youth walking. Afterwards, they started “criticizing the victims’ clothes and started attacking the victims,” the indictment read. Also, the police officers in question hit the two youth's heads, kicked them and pressed their weapons on their bodies, according to the indictment.
