Half of the fines issued for failing to adhere to COVID-19 precautions were targeted at residents of the southeastern province of Gaziantep, the governor tweeted May 14.
Gaziantep Governor Davut Gül responded to a resident on Twitter who asked him to implement stricter precautions.
“Please implement strict measures, we’ve only left the house for bread and produce for 50 days. There’s no other way to get out of this, our prudence isn’t working,” a Gaziantep resident told the governor on Twitter.
“We’ve issued half the fines nationwide in Gaziantep!” Gül tweeted. “You have a huge responsibility; you’ll have a lot of trouble paying these fines. Please warn people around you…”
Some 998 businesses and 92,714 individuals in the city were fined a total of 144.3 million liras since the start of the COVID-19 outbreak, Gaziantep Governor’s Office said May 14.
