Here's what unfolded during Turkey's local elections on March 31 through Duvar English's lenses.

Unofficial election results

According to the unofficial results, the main opposition CHP has finished the race in the first place nationwide with 37.74 percent of the votes while the ruling AKP had 35.49 percent. Some 99.82 percent of the ballot boxes were counted.

According to these results, the CHP became the first party nationwide for the first time since the 1977 general elections.

The ruling AKP's Istanbul candidate Murat Kurum said they would consider the local elections as a milestone, and take the voters' message in the ballots into consideration for the forthcoming period. 

Erdoğan says results 'unsatisfactory' for AKP

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has said the local election results "unfortunately fell short of the party's expectations," during his address to the nation at the AKP headquarters in the capital Ankara province. 

"The nation sends its messages through the ballot," said Erdoğan and acknowledged that the 2024 local elections resulted in an overall victory for the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP). 

"We will courageously self-criticize the loss we incurred," the President said.  

CHP becomes first party nationwide after 47 years

The main opposition CHP has still been leading the race nationwide with 37.22 percent of the votes according to the state-run AA while the ruling AKP had 35.91 percent. Some 86.60 percent of the ballot boxes were counted.

According to unofficial results, the CHP will become the first party nationwide for the first time since the 1977 general elections.

Far-right YRP emerges as third party nationwide

Far-right Islamist New Welfare Party (YRP) has been leading the race in the third place nationwide with 5.93 percent of the votes. YRP unofficially won one metropolitan (Şanlıurfa), one provincial (Yozgat), 37 districts, and 19 town municipalities. 

YRP has departed from the ruling People's Alliance just before the local elections.

İYİ chair Akşener not to take stage on election night

Nationalist opposition İYİ Party chair Meral Akşener would not make a press release on election night, the party headquarters stated. İYİ merely won 3.71 percent of the votes nationwide after departed from the main-opposition Nation Alliance and fielded candidates against CHP.

Akşener will make a speech on April 1.

CHP still leads local elections

In a surprising result, the main opposition CHP has still been leading the race nationwide with 37.13 percent of the votes according to the state-run AA while the ruling AKP had 36.14 percent. Some 74.84 percent of the ballot boxes were counted. 

 

People in Diyarbakır take streets to celebrate DEM's unofficial victory

Pro-Kurdish DEM Party supporters took the streets after mayoral candidate Ayşe Serra Bucak Küçük garnered 64.55 percent of the votes against her closest rival from AKP who merely received 16.63 percent.

Istanbulites celebrates İmamoğlu's unofficial victory

As of 11.00 p.m., supporters of CHP's Istanbul mayoral candidate İmamoğlu gathered in front of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) building to celebrate his victory after he garnered 50,54 of the votes.

DEM Party chairs announce victory in trustee-led provinces

The pro-Kurdish DEM Party’s co-chair Tuncer Bakırhan celebrated the party’s victory in southeastern provinces, “The Kurdish people are adamant on local democracy. Our urban consensus strategy has paid off. We have won despite trustee mayors and fraudulent voters.”

According to unofficial results, the party has won over provinces such as Diyarbakır, Mardin, Van, and Siirt which were under trustee administrations appointed by the government despite victories in the 2019 local elections.

Erdoğan to speak at 12.30 a.m.

Turkey's Presidential Communications Director Fahrettin Altun has stated that President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan would appear before the nation at 12.30 a.m. to comment on the local election results. Erdoğan's fleet was seen leaving the presidential mansion in Istanbul after initial election results pointed to an overwhelming victory by the incumbent CHP candidate Ekrem İmamoğlu.

DEM Party's Istanbul candidates issue statement

Pro-Kurdish DEM Party’s Istanbul co-mayoral candidate Meral Danış Beştaş commented on the CHP candidate Ekrem İmamoğlu’s performance in the province. “İmamoğlu should not claim ownership of all the votes he has received. Our constituents voted for him to punish the ruling AKP,” she said during a statement at the party’s Istanbul headquarters.

Ruling People's Alliance stays silent

The ruling People's Alliance and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has been staying silent without any press release. Even though it was reported that Erdoğan would give his traditional balcony speech at 10.30 p.m., he has not started his speech yet while the silence at the AKP headquarters has been continuing.

CHP lead local elections in first place

The main opposition CHP has been leading the race nationwide with 37.50 percent of the votes according to the state-run AA while the ruling AKP had 36.57 percent. Some 59.28 percent of the ballot boxes were counted. 

The last time the CHP was the first party was in the 1977 general elections with 33.30 percent of the vote.

CHP leader Özel speaks

As early results still show the main opposition CHP as the first party, CHP leader Özgür Özel said they have won in Adana, Ankara, Antalya, Aydın, Eskişehir, Mersin, Muğla, Tekirdağ, İzmir, Istanbul, Balıkesir, Bursa, Manisa and Denizli provinces according to their data.

Turkish police attack DEM supporters celebrating unofficial results in Van

After 46.88 percent of the ballot boxes were counted, eastern Van province's residents took to the streets to celebrate after DEM Party mayoral candidate Abdullah Zeydan received 54 percent of the votes.

The police attacked the celebrating people with rubber bullets and water cannons.

Detention for DEM Party provincial head

The pro-Kurdish DEM Party announced its Şırnak co-provincial head Abdullah Güngen was detained.

CHP still leads race nationwide

The main-opposition CHP has been still the first party nationwide with 38.55 percent of the votes according to the state-run AA while the ruling AKP had 37.14 percent. Some 43.74 percent of the ballot boxes were counted.

Fatih experiences power outages

Istanbul's Fatih district, one of the strongholds of the Islamist conservatives, has been experiencing power outages in some polling stations after the main-opposition CHP's mayoral candidate  Mahir Polat surprisingly gained momentum against the AKP.

DEM wins back metropolitan municipalities

Pro-Kurdish DEM Party has become first party in eastern Diyarbakır, Van, Mardin metropolitan municipalities with a very wide margin against its closest rival AKP.

Interior Ministry appointed trustees to 48 HDP municipalities, including three metropolitan, five provincial, 33 district, and seven town municipalities after the 2019 local elections. HDP's successor DEM has been leading the race in the most of the aforementioned municipalities even though its total vote share decreased.

CHP becomes first party nationwide

The main-opposition CHP has become the first party nationwide with 39.15 percent of the votes according to the state-run AA while the ruling AKP had 37.70 percent. Some 28 percent of the ballot boxes were counted.

Yavaş speaks

CHP's incumbent candidate in Ankara, Mansur Yavaş, has tweeted that "Metropolitan (municipality) is done, we are waiting for district results."

"I invite all my fellow citizens, except polling station representatives, to the garden of Ankara Metropolitan Municipality headquarters at 10 p.m..

İmamoğlu speaks

CHP's incumbent candidate in Istanbul, Ekrem İmamoğlu, said they are "very pleased" with data coming from about 40 percent of ballot boxes, and they "have obtained the trust of our citizens and their belief in us."

Two far-right parties lead race in two municipalities

In central Anatolian Yozgat province, far-right Islamist New Welfare Party (YRP) candidate Kazım Arslan has been leading the election with 37.23 percent of the votes against its closest rival from the government's far-right ally Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) that garnered 31.09 percent. YRP departed from the ruling People's Alliance before local elections. In Şanlıurfa province, YRP and AKP has been racing with each other with a very narrow margin.

In central Anatolian Sivas province, government's ultra-nationalist Grand Unity Party (BBP) candidate Adem Uzun has been in the first place with 44.68 percent of the votes against its ally AKP which garnered 31.27 percent.

The counting process has not been completed in any of the provinces yet.

Several far-right parties has gained momentum in the country particularly before 2023 general elections.

Broadcast ban lifted

YSK lifted broadcast ban on the outcomes of the elections. According to the state-run Anadolu Agency, 8.8 per cent of the ballot boxes were counted.

Gazete Duvar publishes live results from AA and opposition-aligned Anka Agency. Duvar English publishes results for Istanbul, Ankara, and Izmir-three major provinces.

Voting ended

The voting process has ended across Turkey and the counting started. Turkey has voted for district municipality mayors, metropolitan municipality mayors if it is a metropolitan province, members of municipal councils, and neighborhood heads ("mukhtars"). More than 61 million voters were eligible to vote in the elections in more than 200,000 ballot boxes.

The election council's propaganda ban still continues.

Accordingly, the Supreme Election Council (YSK) has banned journalists from filming during vote counting process.

Elections end in East

Election process ended in 32 eastern provinces at 04.00 p.m. and the counting started.

Ahmet Yener, Chair of the Supreme Election Council (YSK), stated that the board would provide information regarding the counting procedures at 05.00 p.m. and that it would decide on removing broadcasting bans, which would normally end at 9 p.m, earlier in a meeting.

DEM mayoral candidate hospitalized

In south eastern Mardin province's Ömerli district, the police intervened with tear gas against the dispute between AKP and DEM Party supporters in Atatürk Primary School.

DEM's Mardin Metropolitan Municipality Co-Mayoral candidate Devrim Demir, who was present in the school during the incidents, was hospitalized due to being sprayed with tear gas at close range.

One died in gun attack

Emin Çelik, Pro-Kurdish People's Equality and Democracy (DEM) Party's polling station member, died and 11 people were wounded a fight between two groups in Ağaçlıdere neighbourhood of Diyarbakır's central Sur district over the neighborhood head elections.

Elections start in West

Local elections started in 49 provinces at 08.00 (local time).

Elections start in East

 Local elections started in 32 eastern provinces at 07.00 (local time).
