Locals in Istanbul's Zeytinburnu district have caught a woman pouring bleach into stray animals' food, Demirören News Agency reported on Nov. 15.
The woman, Feride K., has been pouring the chemical into the food and water bowls of stray animals for a long time, locals said, adding that some animals died because of her.
As she attempted to poison the animals once again, locals managed to catch her red-handed and a brawl ensued, footage of the incident showed.
Speaking to the agency, Feyza Pekacar and her mother Nesrin Pekacar, who caught the woman pouring bleach, said that Feride K. believed that the animals spread diseases.
According to Feyza Pekacar, Feride K. thinks that the source of COVID-19 is stray animals.
"It's alright that they don't like animals, but they shouldn't harm them," she said, noting that they've been onto the woman for a long time.
Arzu Yılandiloğlu, a local animal rights defender, said that five cats died as a result of bleach poisoning. She also called on the municipality to place bowls with their logos on them to deter such people from harming animals.
