Shopkeepers in the southeastern province of Mardin’s Dargeçit district protested Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu by closing their stores, Mezopotamya News Agency reported on Sept. 11.
Soylu initially met with the provincial General Director of Security, Gendarmerie General Commander as well as province and district governors in Mardin for the "Provincial Security Meeting."
Afterwards, he wanted to pay a visit to shopkeepers in the Dargeçit district.
The district municipality, run by the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), washed the roads that Soylu was scheduled to pass through.
However, the majority of the shopkeepers who opened their stores in the morning closed their shutters upon Soylu's arrival. Soylu was able to visit only four stores.
