A restaurant belonging to Boğaziçi University Alumni Association (BÜMED) has been sealed by Istanbul’s Sarıyer municipality on the grounds that it serves alcohol.

BÜMED announced that the move came after the rector’s office filed a complaint.

“As you know, our restaurant within the BÜMED facility was selling alcohol with a license but after the rector’s office banned alcohol sale and filed a complaint, it (restaurant) was sealed by the Sarıyer municipality today,” BÜMED said in a written statement on Aug. 25.

BÜMED had previously announced that the rector’s office had banned alcohol sale at the restaurant located on the university campus. In an e-mail sent to the alumni on July 27, BÜMED had said that the rector’s office had fined them 575,371 fines liras for operating the restaurant although it has an alcohol license. The association had pointed out that the university management does not have such authority.
