Social media platforms have become cartels and this has shown the need for Turkey to draw its own path, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has said, adding that countries across the globe should get together and form a digital legal system to solve problems.

Social media platforms have become cartels and this shows the need for Turkey to draw its own path, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has said.

“I am leaving aside all the platforms, traps and swamps that could drag our children into bad habits. Even the legal and immoral appropriations of just the social media platforms that have become cartels alone are the most profound expression that we must draw our own path,” he said at the “Forum Metaverse” event on March 21.

He added that problems cannot be solved if a global digital legal system, which all countries would agree on and stand behind, is not created.

Turkey’s potential is at the level that it could establish its own Silicon Valley, he said, adding that the government was launching a “digital mobilization.”

The metaverse, which refers to shared virtual world environments which people can access via the internet, and similar platforms will likely become an integral part of the future generations, and infrastructure technologies on 5G and 6G must be built rapidly, Erdoğan said.

But such large investments will not be realized that fast, he added.

Besides building technological infrastructures, the government wants to ensure creating content that can be used by Turkey and ultimately the world, he said.

“Since there is now a growing digital economy reality, it is not possible to solve this problem without establishing a digital legal order that all countries will accept by consensus and stand behind,” Erdoğan added.
