Turkish police on Sept. 25 detained some 20 HDP members, including Kars Co-Mayor Ayhan Bilgen, over 2014 violent protests against the siege by ISIS of the Syrian Kurdish town of Kobane. Detention warrants were issued for a total of 82 people in seven provinces. Those sought were in the MYK of the party at the time of the protests.
Thousands of Twitter users have marked the seventh anniversary of Gezi Park protests on May 31 via sharing pictures and quotes from the landmark demonstrations, while also commemorating those killed by police. Initially centered in Istanbul, the protests spread to all over Turkey starting from June 1, as millions took to the streets to raise their voices against police brutality and government policies. It turned into the largest wave of protests against the government in Turkey's history.
HDP co-chair Mithat Sancar has denied former deputy Sırrı Süreyya Önder's remarks on the right-wing İYİ (Good) Party having consulted them in the past. Another politician to comment on Önder's claims was experienced politician Ahmet Türk, the sacked mayor of the southeastern province of Mardin, who said that he was surprised to hear them. There are things that need to be kept hidden in politics," Türk said.
İYİ Party spokesperson Yavuz Ağıralioğlu said that his party didn't consult the HDP in the past, as he called on Sırrı Süreyya Önder to prove his claims. "We don't have anyone who can meet with the group that fails to acknowledge that the PKK are murderers. We didn't have any direct or indirect contact with the HDP. If someone from our party met with the HDP, Önder should name him," Ağıralioğlu said.
