A Turkish court has sentenced Recep Adıgüzel and Berkant Fitoz, who protested the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) Yalova deputy Meliha Akyol's faulty car parking by live broadcasting her car, to a fine of 18,000 Turkish Liras and two years and one month in prison for "unlawfully obtaining and disseminating personal data.”

On Aug. 21, 2023, Adıgüzel, who lives in western Yalova province, called the police and filed a criminal complaint after a luxury car belonging to AKP MP Akyol violated the parking ban, according to ANKA news agency.

Adıgüzel broadcast live for nearly two hours to show the MP’s faulty car parking. In the broadcast, he said, "Last week, right here, a tradesman friend of ours was fined 10,000 liras. The police officer who issued the fine said, 'The laws are equal to everyone.’ Today, the deputy's car is standing here. Justice should work equally for everyone."

He added that although many people called the police for one and a half hour, the police did not come and write a ticket.

In the case against Fitoz and Adıgüzel, the court sentenced them for "unlawful acquisition and dissemination of personal data" on the grounds that they recorded the conversation between the police officers when they arrived the scene.

Adıgüzel said that they would appeal the verdict and that they were punished while waiting for justice.
