Turkish soldiers were seen firing automatic weapons in the air to disperse a group of villagers in the eastern province of Van as they protested the construction of a marble quarry on May 27.

The villagers protested the construction of the quarry on an area that used to be registered as the village's grazing area, but was rezoned to allow construction some 10 years ago.

The company then obtained military escort to accompany the work machinery to the village on May 27, where soldiers fired their weapons in the air to scare off residents trying to protect their property.

Soldiers reportedly detained four people and destroyed around 20 of the villagers' barns.
