Twelve migrants were found frozen to death in the northwestern province of Edirne near Turkey’s İpsala Border with Greece on Feb. 2, Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu said.

Soylu said the migrants were pushed back by Greek border units.

“12 of the 22 migrants pushed back by Greek Border Units, stripped off from their clothes and shoes have frozen to death. EU is remediless, weak and void of humane feelings. Greek border units thug against victims, tolerant towards FETO” Soylu tweeted.

Earlier, the Edirne Governor's Office said that nine migrants were found frozen to death in a village close to the border, and one migrant at risk of freezing was rescued. Later, two more dead migrants were found, and the rescued migrant could not be saved and died.

Hundreds of thousands of migrants and refugees used Greece as the main gateway to Europe through Turkey in 2015 and 2016, until Ankara and the European Union struck a deal to stem the flow.

While Greece defends its borders heavily with military units, Turkish President Recep Erdoğan occasionally threatens the EU to let migrants into Greece.
